Septic spill

I'm still keeping track of the odd things which get spilled onto the freeway and reported in the traffic reports. This morning, a septic-tank disposal service truck overturned and spilled its contents all over The 8 East near Alpine. I guess you could say the sh*t hit the macadam.

Back East

I took some time off the week before Thanksgiving to visit my elderly ailing father in Maryland and some friends in Charlottesville, Va.

I knew I wasn't in California anymore when I got onto I-97, which is the main N-S artery from the Baltimore beltway (ring road) down to Annapolis. I remember when it was built, sometime in the late '80s. It was so big and spiffy and we loved how it just sped traffic on its way. So, I figured it wouldn't take me any time to get from my hotel which was just off I-97 down to Annapolis for a lunch date w/ a friend.

WRONG. The freeway was only 2 lanes in each direction, and the prevailing speed *in the fast lane* was 65 mph. Not b/c there was too much traffic--rather just b/c that seems to be the speed people go. What's with calling that "a freeway"?!?

The freeway which runs just yards from my apt here in Del Mar, "The 5," is 5-7 lanes wide in *each direction* and I routinely hit speeds of 85-90 mph in the fast lane outside of rush hour. *That's* a freeway!

BTW, Dad is doing pretty well, considering. Having 3000 miles between us is evidently good for both of us!
